Message from the Dean

Chris Moore, Ph D, Dean of the Faculty of Science

Welcome to the Faculty of Science at Dalhousie University, a Faculty that I am proud to lead and serve. We are a community of more than 3,000 students on their path to life-long fulfillment guided by about 200 faculty members who are assisted by devoted technical and administrative staff.  Read our First Year Newsletter here.

As the twenty-first century unfolds, it is clear that the scientific challenges facing us are great. The list is long, but some challenges stand out as profoundly complex and serious:

  • The human population is approaching the earth’s carrying capacity.
  • Human health and psychology are put under stress.
  • Economic systems must adjust.
  • Energy supply and usage must adjust.
  • Life in the oceans is changing at an alarming rate.
  • The physics and chemistry of the atmosphere and oceans, and how these interact, must be understood to manage climate change and sea level rise.
  • The mass of data is huge and the complexity of the interacting systems is stunning. They demand new tools of statistics and mathematical analysis.
  • The built environment and our articles of everyday life need new materials that have zero-footprint throughout their lifecycle.

Progress is being made on these issues and our faculty members are engaged on all fronts. Through their research work, they are able to connect students with the most exciting advances as they occur as well as lay down the foundational skills necessary for the student who wants to make a difference.

If the following characteristics apply to you, we would be honoured to play a part in your development.

  • You love creative problem solving and analysis.
  • You want to know how human or natural processes really work.
  • You enjoy working and playing hard and get satisfaction from accomplishments.
  • You want to make a contribution that helps people, the environment, or how they interact.
