Math Camp for Black Students:
Target Group: Black students in grades 6 and 7.
This mathematics camp is targeted to black students in grades 6 and 7 from across Nova Scotia. Students are selected to attend the camp from schools all over Nova Scotia. The aim of the camp is to generate interest in mathematics, statistics, computers and sciences so these students can pursue further studies with enthusiasm and appreciation of these subjects. Students are brought to the Dalhousie campus and stay in Howe Hall. Mornings and early afternoons are devoted to lectures and mathematical, statistical and computer activities, while late afternoon and evenings are devoted to extra curricular activities where they can apply the talents they have learnt in the classes and practice them.

Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) Camp

Dates: TBC
This camp is aimed at high school students in Nova Scotia. The purpose is to identify, stimulate, and encourage mathematical talent. Accordingly, letters calling for nominations are sent out in early March to all the high schools in the province, both public and private. The stipulation is that a school can make no more than two nominations and that the nominees are to have finished either grade 10 or 11.
Target Group:  Students after grades 10 and 11

Dalhousie University Mathematics Outreach program: High school workshops are available for both teachers and students. The program is run by Richard Nowakowski and Paul Ottaway.

Math Circles: The purpose of the Math Circles program is to foster interest in Mathematics among talented high school students and expose them to mathematics beyond the high school curriculum. We feel that this initiative will be especially worthwhile to those students participating in the Nova Scotia High School Math League. The coordinators of Math Circles at Dalhousie are: Angela Siegel and Richard Nowakowski.
Target Group:  Students in grades 10-12

Math League: The Nova Scotia High School Math League is designed to stimulate and challenge high school students across the province. The NSML is based on the very successful Newfoundland Math League which has been running since 1987. This is an excellent way for students to compete in a friendly manner and learn some mathematics in the process. Over the next years, we anticipate the NSML to expand to include additional school boards and eventually encompass the entire province. Target Group:  Students in grades 10-12

Department of Microbiology and Immunology

Group tours are available upon request.

Department of Oceanography

Faculty members are available to speak to your class about the research being done at Dalhousie.

Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science

Holo-Tent: The Holo-Tent is physics in action: it's an exhibit that can be brought to interested schools anywhere in the province. It's a hands-on way for students to experience lasers and holograms. Inside the Holo-tent, students can do a physics experiment and make their own hologram to keep.

Class tours: School groups are welcomed to visit the Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science. Topics include: liquid nitrogen shows, planetarium, photography, space and satellites, Arctic observatories. Preferred months are May, June and December.

Science Enrichment Program - Imhotep´s Legacy:
Imhotep's Legacy is an after-school science enrichment program which targets African Nova Scotian learners in grades 7, 8, and 9. Dalhousie science students visit participating schools weekly to deliver hands-on science activities, alternating with homework help. ANS learners, a maximum of five per grade, are selected by the school administrators.  For more information, visit http://imhotep.dal.ca/index.php.

Department of Psychology and Neuroscience

Lecture: Students are invited to sit in on a lecture for Psychology 1011: Introduction to Psychology and Neuroscience (September-November) OR Psychology 1012 (January-March). This course provides an introduction to memory and forgetting, cognition, intelligence, motivation, social behaviour, personality and psychopathology.

Availability: Sept.-Dec 2008
Limit:  30 students
Target Group:  Students in grades 10-12
