Outreach Programs

There are a number of outreach programs available to Nova Scotia teachers for FREE. The following is a snapshot of outreach programs that would be great resources for your classroom.

Imhotep's Legacy Academy (ILA) - Science Enrichment Program

Imhotep's Legacy is an after-school science enrichment program which targets African Nova Scotian learners in grades 7, 8, and 9. Dalhousie science students visit participating schools weekly to deliver hands-on science activities, alternating with homework help. ANS learners, a maximum of five per grade, are selected by the school administrators.

Let's Talk Science (LTS)

Let’s Talk Science is a national science outreach program that visits schools and participates in community events. The majority of schools visited are within the Halifax Regional Municipality, but we can go to schools all over Nova Scotia. All Let's Talk Science activities through Dal are provided FREE to schools thanks to support from Dalhousie University and national sponsors of LTS.

Options Available:
Partnership Program - Teachers are partnered with volunteer scientists, usually graduate students, who visit their class on several occasions (typically three times over the school year) to lead the students in hands-on science activities. This continuing relationship gives students the opportunity to know a real scientist. LTS volunteers also have helped to facilitate visits to Dalhousie. Volunteers will communicate with teachers in advance of their visits, which gives teachers more input on the activity and can be useful to help meet curriculum outcomes.

NS Math Circles

NS Math Circles is a high school outreach program that is dedicated to enriching the experiences of high school students in all areas of mathematics.

Once a month, September through June, a Math Circles event is held in the Math & Stats Department at Dalhousie University. These evening events are free! A typical event consists of a pizza supper and presentation on an area of mathematics. The presentations involve a lot of interaction and student participation. The presentations are geared toward high school aged students, but younger students, parents and teachers are welcomed also!  Students can come with a teacher, parent or they can just come with friends for an evening of pizza, mathematics and fun!

In addition to local events, Math Circles travels the province giving interactive mathematical presentations in the classroom! Free of charge!!

Thanks to the support of Dalhousie University and funding from the Imperial Oil Foundation, NS Math Circles now takes its presentations on the road! All of our talks are interactive, fun and related to high school curriculum outcomes. For every grade level, we have a selection of grade appropriate talks and all of our presentations can be adapted to suit your classroom needs. To host a Math Circles presentation in your classroom or to find out when the next local event is, please email us at mathcircles@dal.ca.
