  • Alumni and Friends After Hours

    Please join us at a new event called Alumni and Friends After Hours. This is an after work gathering with the Dean of Science, Dr Chris Moore, for casual conversation, updates about the Faculty, and generally catching up with fellow alumni, retired faculty and others. We are hoping this will become a regular event.

  • Science As Art – Deadline extended!

    The deadline for submitting photos and images for the 2011 Faculty of Science Calendar contest has been extended!

    All Faculty of Science alumni, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to submit their photos and images.

    Past submissions include sunsets, insects, plasma globes, protoplasts, a superconductor levitating on a rare earth magnet, triple immunolabeling for serotonin, CSP and dVMAT, etc. The topics of the photographs and images are limited only by your imagination. We’d love to see GIS/mapping images, or mathematical images submitted this year.

    Deadline for submissions is Friday, March 12 at 4 p.m. Atlantic time.

  • Science As Art – Call for images

    With the 2010 Faculty of Science Calendar out in circulation, the time has come to look for photographs and images for next year’s calendar.

    All Faculty of Science alumni, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to submit their photos and images.

    Past submissions include sunsets, insects, plasma globes, protoplasts, a superconductor levitating on a rare earth magnet, triple immunolabeling for serotonin, CSP and dVMAT, etc. The topics of the photographs and images are limited only by your imagination.   • Rosanna Nicol will be off to Oxford to study in Sepember 2010.  The University of Kings College student has recently been selected as one of the 11 Canadian Rhodes' Scholars.  She is in her final year of BA Honours in History and Economics.  Congratulations Rosanna!

  • The W. Andrew MacKay Alumni Scholarships  [named for Dalhousie's eighth President] have been announced. The awards recognize commendable academic achievements while demonstrating leadership in various extra-curricular activities.  We are pleased to say that three of our students have been chosen as recipients:

  • 2010 Faculty of Science Calendar now available

    The 2010 Faculty of Science Calendar is available. The calendar showcases the creative eyes of our Faculty's students, faculty, staff and alumni as captured through the lenses of their cameras. It also highlights various students, faculty members and alumni who are contributing both to the university and, more broadly, to the world of science.

    Copies of the calendar are available in LSC 827 and cost $10.

  • Hall of Fame award for Dr. Brian Hall
    Dr. Brian Hall, evolutionary developmental biologist and Professor E
    meritus, was honoured at the Discovery Centre Awards on November 26, 2009. He is now a member of the Discovery Centre's Hall of Fame, an award that recognizes current or former Nova Scotians who have made an outstanding lifetime contribution to society through scientific and technological discovery and invention.

    The Faculty of Science had the largest number of Academic All-Canadians for the 2009 year.  The next closest Faculty was the Faculty of Health Professions with 22, then the Faculty of Management with 18.  Rah! Rah!

  • "What Use is Disorder in Matter?" is the title of the next Faculty of Science Lecture.  Dr. Mary Anne White, Chemistry will be speaking on Monday, November 30th at 4 pm in the Great Hall of the University Club.  Refreshments will be provided and all are welcome.

  • Inspring a New Generation of Researchers
            Every summer, scores of talented students are employed in labs across the university. Now, thanks to a $1 million endowment from the David and Faye Sobey Foundation, undergrads will benefit from the creation of 10 more research jobs.
