At Dalhousie, you'll learn not only the specifics of a particular science subject, but you'll be exposed to the entire process of asking questions, seeking answers and communicating your results.
The Faculty of Science offers enormous opportunities for you to learn, grow and discover. With more than 190 full-time permanent faculty and about 3,000 undergraduate students, we have a comfortable student/teacher ratio of 15-to-1. And, with more than 500 different science classes, from Aquaculture to Zoology, we offer a depth of teaching and learning unparalleled in Atlantic Canada.
But you don't just learn in the classroom. Students learn by doing and from each other. First-year students are encouraged to sign up for Science Buddies, a mentoring program designed to make the transition from high school to university easier.
Or, you could decide to take part in the Dalhousie Integrated Science Program (DISP), an innovative option for first-year science students. DISP takes an interdisciplinary approach to science with hands-on classes, field trips, labs, research projects and team problem-solving sessions.
Then there's the co-operative education option, allowing you to gain experience and make money as you study. This program, available in most departments, provides students with three work terms and usually starts in the summer of your second year.
Many students also gain relevant work experience through summer employment in our research labratories. Andrea Faryniuk, for example, a Microbiology and Immunology student secured summer research grants to conduct summer research on the effects of heat stress on cellular proteins. Also a student athlete, she worked closely with Professor Tom McRae.
