Population and evolutionary genetics of fishes and marine organisms

I joined the Biology Department in 2001 after eight years on the faculty at the University of Washington. I am interested in the population and evolutionary genetics of fishes and marine organisms. In particular, I want to know how genetic variation is distributed within and among populations, and how past and ongoing processes have shaped the patterns of genetic variation that exist today. Examples of past processes include previous ice ages that forced fishes into refugia where they evolved in isolation for periods of time, and much more recent human-related impacts that have drastically reduced the abundance of some species and populations. Ongoing processes include environmental factors that influence connectivity among populations, and varying patterns of natural selection that lead to local adaptations.
