Dynamics in the Ocean
John Cullen’s research interests include the physiology and ecology of marine phytoplankton, ocean observation and prediction systems, and the culture of microalgae for fuels and protein. He shared leadership of a real-time coastal observatory in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia (2002 - 2008). This project applied his research on a wide variety of optical measurements for automated descriptions of plankton dynamics in the ocean. His interest in oceanographic interpretations of optical measurements continues. Cullen is recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher; many of his publications focus on the influence of environmental conditions (for example, nutrient supply or ultraviolet radiation) on marine phytoplankton. This led to his selection as Fellow of The Oceanography Society in 2005. |
